Baystate South Wing Tour
Architects and designers at Steffian Bradley Architect’s (SBA) Connecticut Office recently had the chance to tour the Baystate South Wing and Pharmacy Relocation Project at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. The project has been under construction for about 8 months, reaching a point where it was a good time to check out the construction progress.
Mark Fobert, AIA, Project Manager for Construction Administration, led the tour of the $40 million dollar, 90,000 sqft interior fit-out of three shell floors into inpatient bed units and the relocation of the inpatient pharmacy. Each unit consists of 32 private patient rooms which will serve both intermediate and acute care surgical patients. The 7th floor has a rehab gym to serve the total joint and orthopedic patients dedicated to that unit.
The new inpatient pharmacy will provide a safe working environment for pharmacy staff, centralizing service to the inpatient floors and allowing all the pharmacy services to be in one location. Private and acoustically isolated work areas are provided for focused order verification, assisted by modern equipment, which will increase efficiency and safety.
The project, which is the third phase of the 640,000 sqft Hospital of the Future (HoF) Addition, is being delivered using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method with Suffolk Construction. The team for the first two phases of the HoF recently received the 2015 VISTA award sponsored by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), making that the third VISTA award win for SBA & Baystate and the sixth VISTA award received by SBA.
